Alboraya horchata, the nectar of the pharaohs

Refreshing, nutritious and delicious, horchata is one of the most popular drinks and as typical of Valencia as paella and Fallas. It is undoubtedly the most emblematic gastronomic speciality of the town of Alboraya, where tiger nuts, an aphrodisiac tubercle, have a Designation of Origin. At a time when vegan and gluten-free are really in vogue, horchata has the appeal of being nutritious and healthy. It is vegan and contains no gluten or lactose.

Did you know...

Barcelona is the other capital of horchata, and the descendants of immigrants from Alicante and Valencia who settled in Barcelona more than a century ago claim the credit for the good horchata here, which seems to have begun with the sale of the tiger nut drink in Pla de Palau, just a few steps from Baboia. So don't hesitate to get up-close and personal with your horchata ice cream and head to the nineteenth-century markets.
